The most listened to radio station in England is BBC Radio 2, followed by Radio 4 then Radio 1, with the average person listens to the radio just under 16 hours a week. Another popular radio station set up which recently became mainstream in 2008 is galaxy, this station covers 6 regions including: Birmingham, Manchester, North East, South Coast, Scotland, Yorkshire as well as the rest of the UK via digital radio. A restricted service license (RSL) is a license granted to radio and television stations to allow them to broadcast within the UK to serve communities and the like. As well as this there is also the financial side of starting up a radio station, a general breakdown of the costs can be looked at here:

  • Application fee - £400 (paid to Ofcom)
